Contra Wiki

Alien Ulcer is a very troublesome disease. Beginning with mild to severe stomach pain, the dentition develops abnormally and the mouth begins to exhale the infectious Poisonous Gel. If you ever go to the home of the Black Viper, be sure to give them proper "surgery".
~ Translation of the official description from Contra 4

The Wadder (超猛獣 ワーダ Chō Mōjū Wāda?, lit. "Ultra-Wild Animal Wadder") is a recurring enemy in the Contra series. It is a grotesque alien parasite with an oversized mouth, growing on the hive's biomass that spews out Poisonous Insect Gels.

Description[]

Wadders are grotesque parasites with hypertrophied mouths growing out from the alien nest's biomass. Their mouths are comprised of sharp fangs and a tongue, which they incessantly open and close as if searching for something to eat.

When an intruder is detected inside the hive, they attack by vomiting out flying organic parasites known as Poisonous Insect Gels. These first come out slowly from the mouth and then launch themselves at great speed toward their potential prey. Wadders can be destroyed in order to prevent them from populating the area with more Gels.

Appearances[]

Super C[]

While the original arcade version of Super Contra doesn't feature any Wadders at all, they were added to the NES conversion of the game, Super C. Wadders are only found in what became the new final stage of this version, Alien Area 3, attached to the walls of the alien hive. They behave pretty much the same as their previous incarnations, by first slowly releasing a single Poisonous Insect Gel that floats near the monster for a moment, and then this projectile starts to incessantly chase the player. It is worth noting that the level features several Wadders in the background, although only those that can attack will constantly show their teeth.

Contra Returns[]

While Wadders still spew out Gels in this game, these do not possess sudden quick attacks like in previous titles, making their evasion far easier, although they are indestructible this time around.

Contra: Operation Galuga[]

In this game, Wadders appear within the body of Java and are able to spew out four Poisonous Insect Gels at one time.

Trivia[]

  • In the arcade and MSX2 versions of Contra, Wadders appear as small monster-like faces instead of large mouths.
